LitRpg book? Yeah....Right...Whatever...
LOVE IT! -Here is why: - I am using paragraph breaks instead labeling each section-
At least that is what I was thinking when I kept seeing reviews from, what has essentially become an occult following, it's fan base. Seriously I used to play D&D for crying out loud. The idea of actually reading the mechanics instead of playing them yourself, because that is the actual point, was legitimately a ridiculous travesty! That is right, so then I had to get the audiobook here https://amzn.to/3RxnaOB or click on the cover pic below. Even if you freaking hate everything about it, Heath's performance will knock you r socks off while your shoes are still on. I will explain it the best way I can, just keep on reading and maybe it will make some sense.
"He Who Fights with Monsters" Book 1 offers readers a captivating introduction to the LitRPG genre, focusing on the evolution of the protagonist without relying heavily on traditional game mechanics, no game master or AI or System running things in the background etc...
While the narrative includes elements such as character screens displaying vital stats and levels, similar to a character sheet. It distinguishes itself by lacking a structured system that often dominates other titles, such as The Infinite Realm series by Ivan Kal- stay tuned for that review- spoiler alert it is amazing!
This minimalist approach allows for a more immersive listening experience, encouraging listeners( or readers lol) to engage with the characters and their journey rather than getting bogged down by intricate gameplay rules and entire chapters dedicated to single character sheet.
Even if the magic system doesn't resonate with every reader, the compelling performance from narrator Heath Miller, well-crafted relatable characters dropped instantly into a surprisingly enticing plot come to together seamlessly and seduce the listener into NEEDING to know how this all ends!
This does ensure that no matter the format you choose to partake in, it remains enjoyable, and captivating for both, the brand new or seasoned fans of both LitRPG and fantasy alike!
