Zed, Murphy...You were my first!

Discussing and reviewing the Slow Burn Box Set: The Complete First Saga in the Post-Apocalyptic Series (Books 1-9) written by Bobby Adair and performed by Phil Thron. This was the first audiobook that became a movie in my head, an experience, not just a listen!

My Personal Experience

When I first started listening to audiobooks, (I want to clarify that I spell "audiobook" as one word on purpose, many disagree and I say pound sand its a single product LOL) I was skeptical as far as entertainment is concerned. I couldn't have told you who the narrator was, or if the performance was good bad or ugly! I got through some Tom Clancy productions, Scott Brick is a legend, not that I knew that at the time, but it set a high bar listening standard for me. I did not even realize that until I started driving truck a year or two later and I thought to re start my Audible subscription. I was hoping to supplement my caffeine intake before my heart exploded and still be able to stay awake into the 9 thru 11 hour part of my driving day. Honestly I can't even remember the book or books I tried to get through after Tom and Scott, but I did cancel my subscription until getting my CDl, to me until this series, it was just someone reading out loud t me. Of course I did not know that is how it would happen.

I have to be honest here and tell you there only two reasons I actually spent a credit on the Slow Burn box set, yup I am a cheap ass, so the first is that the cover is awesome (see over there -left) and it is a 9 book box set for one Audible credit! WHOOOOOOHOOOO! Straight up 56 hours and 16 minutes of post apocalyptic bleached out cannibal (kinda) zombies and performed by Phil Thron (I did not know how awesome he was at the time)!

I won't spoil anything because I really do hope if you read this and are looking for an amazing listen or a good introduction to what the hype of a good audiobook is all about, look no further!

Rating and Reason:

100% LOVE IT!

Here is the why:

Plot stays dynamic and you dive straight in from the very first chapter then hang on!

Character development is insane, now this aspect is always a little subjective to what trials and tribulations the listener/reader can relate too. With that caveat I literally cried while driving down the road listening, as someone whom has seen combat I found a lot of common ground.

Writing aka authors ability to create an immersive world that is not static while also moving the plot ad characters along in their growth AND Bobby Adair goes one step further by putting the work in on the real research side. To this day Slow Burn is still the holder of my favorite performed moments ever title.

Performance, well Phil Thron and Bobby Adair are a match made in heaven, and they continue to prove that with Burn Box trilogy but that will get its own blog later LOL. The performance captured the terror, pain, moments of beauty and self loathing then growth so well I have actually listened to this entire series (still waiting on book 11 Bobby lol) 9 times. No BS their. When the characters feel like your actual friends, I need not say more!

Thank you for reading this, more coming soon!

-General Synopsis-

In Bobby Adair's gripping on going series "Slow Burn," the story unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a viral outbreak that turns the infected into ravenous creatures. I recommend getting the box set books 1 - 9 (it was the complete series until Bobby decided to continue the adventures of Zed and Murphy - that will make more sense later) Kindle, paperback and audio versions are all available for purchase here- https://amzn.to/4cSGzTR . The protagonist, an ordinary man named Zed Zane, must navigate this new reality filled with danger and uncertainty while striving to protect his newly, bonded in blood, family of friends, Murphy, Stephanie and Dell-hoover all make there appearance in the first book don't no spoilers here, if you just want to check out Slow Burn: Zero Day, before committing you can get it here on Kindle or E-book https://amzn.to/4ioU9zq. As societal norms crumble and survival becomes the only goal, you explores themes of resilience, human connection, and the struggle against despair all from the first person perspective of Zed Zane. Adair builds this world out of the ashes everyday life and weaves the tension, humility, self doubt with just the right amount of human connection through a little humor thus immersing listeners in a captivating atmosphere where every decision can mean life or death. With the voice of Phil Thron bringing the story to the next level "Slow Burn" promises to keep you on the edge of your seat! You witness Zed transform into the hero "Captain Null Spot" or his alter ego's alter ego, "Null Spot the Destroyer", while Murphy becomes not only his brother but also his conscious on their journey through a landscape filled with horror and the flicker of hope amidst chaos. This was the first time an audiobook became a "movie in my mind", I truly felt like I knew the characters, I cried with them, got mad, got happy and when it ended got lonely LOL!
